Good Introductory Oilfield Books For Oil & Gas Industry Job Seekers A Primer Of Oilwell Drilling, A Basic Text Of Oil and Gas Drilling, By Ron Baker One of the best books to get acquainted with the oilfield is called "A Primer Of Oilwell Drilling" by Ron Baker. It has been through several editions and is used widely in training programs by companies like Baker Hughes, Pathfinder, and Schlumberger in such programs as MWD school and Mud Engineer School. Ron Baker does a great job of explaining the ins and outs of a working rig. Illustrations are good and rig terms are explained in both layman's terms and oilfield slang. It is not cheap since demand is high from oilfield service companies for training programs and since not many new editions are being printed but is well worth the money. You can find it new and used at the link below. Nontechnical Guide To Petroleum Geology, Exploration, Drilling and Production by Norman J. Hyne, Phd. This is another excellent book that covers a broad range of topics. If you want a good overview of the entire process, from discovering oil through seismic exploration and geology, to wildcat drilling, well completion to production, this is a comprehensive guide. It is well suited for applicants to service jobs such as well logging, MWD, mudlogging, etc, but is good reading for anyone, including first year petroleum engineering students. It covers a broader range of subjects than "A Primer Of Oilwell Drilling" such as horizontal drilling, hydraulic fracturing, well stimulation with CO2, offshore drilling, seismic exploration and more. Oil & Gas Production In Nontechnical Language, By Martin S. Raymond, William L. Leffler This book is well suited for anyone going into the production side of the business such as applying to be an oilfield gauger or pumper, lease service company employee, pipeline company applicant or even oilfield equipment sales. It is specialized to the production side of the industry and does not go into any detail about how wells are drilled. Drilling Technology In Nontechnical Language By Steve Devereux This is another good comprehensive introductory book. It is slightly more technical that "A Primer Of Oilwell Drilling" despite the name. It gives a good in-depth look at the industry from the ground up. Devereux introduces you to both onshore and offshore drilling operations and technology by covering the entire drilling process from basic geology to drilling operations. Contents: Drilling geology Oil and gas generation, migration, and reservoirs Planning and drilling an exploration well on land Planning and drilling a development well offshore Rig selection and rig equipment Drill bits Drilling fluids Directional and horizontal drilling Casting and cementing Evaluation Well control Managing drilling operations Drilling problems and solutions Safety and environmental issues. Deepwater Petroleum Exploration And Production. This is another book from the Nontechnical guide series. It provides a good basic understanding of how wells are drilled in deep water using semi-submersibles and drill ships. I recommend this book for anyone considering working offshore in deep water. It discusses safety and the special techniques used for deepwater wells. Click on any of the photos below for a full summary and review of the books. |
